My Favorite Modern Coastal Decor

One of my favorite things about living in California is its varied terrain and the fact that we can go from beach to mountain to desert in just a few hours. With part of the wine country overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the rest of it just a short drive away, it seems fitting to celebrate the California coast’s laidback vibes with modern coastal decor at home. It’s also a great way to hold onto the light and airy feelings of summer all year long.

For some of you, trying to achieve this aesthetic on your own might leave you feeling a little less light and airy. This blog is for you! I have put together a curated collection of furniture, accessories, and lighting ideas to help you find a point of inspiration and make a splash in your home. Keep reading to learn the ropes of designing a modern coastal home!

Furniture

Since it is the most prominent element of most spaces, let’s start with furniture. You can group these kinds of items together to create a casual yet stylish coastal setup in your living room:

  • A sofa with light-colored upholstery for a clean look that complements the natural light in the room
  • A wood coffee table in an organic shape to connect the space to nature and provide a central gathering point for conversation
  • A woven accent chair (or two!) to create a sense of texture and contrast against the clean lines of the sofa
  • A marble accent table to pair with the accent chairs for the ultimate functionality and a hint of sophistication
  • A console table that speaks to a minimalist aesthetic for versatility

Accessories

Accessories might seem like the cherry on top of a beautifully furnished space, but they actually provide so much more than that in a design. They play a crucial role in introducing color, texture, and personality into your home.

Patterned pillows in earthy tones, like gray and ivory, add to the softness of modern coastal decor, while also breaking up the monotony of solid-colored upholstery. Rugs work well to anchor furniture groupings and provide an additional layer of comfort to make it more inviting. I love a simple jute rug or one with a bohemian pattern to bring elements of the outdoors inside and create a relaxed look.

Accent pieces are a must for sparking conversation and expressing your personality, too. Natural elements, such as a coral art piece or jute balls, bring a touch of the beach into your home. I like to mix up these items with some playful decor, like a brass beetle sculpture, for a unique flair. You can fill the negative space on your walls, too, with minimalist artwork or a mirror with a frame made of natural materials. Hanging decor on the walls pulls the eye upward and guides it around the room. Mirrors also reflect light to create the illusion of a larger space that is light and airy.

Lighting

While we’re on the topic of light, let’s talk about the importance of light fixtures. They are essential for illuminating your modern coastal decor, setting the mood, and ensuring that your space is functional. Your design would not be complete without them!

A floor lamp is a perfect solution to fill an empty corner. I recommend choosing one with curves to soften the look of your space. You might even consider one with a shiny brass finish for a hint of elegance and sophistication. For reading areas and more intimate spaces, table lamps are an ideal choice. This ceramic lamp is a favorite of mine. It features a basketweave pattern to add depth to a design, and a natural linen shade that diffuses the light into a warm, cozy glow.

In the kitchen, pendant lights provide a practical purpose for cooking and dining, in addition to creating an attractive focal point. A glass pendant with metal details or a cotton rope pendant are slightly nautical-inspired choices that also touch on bohemian, organic, industrial, and rustic modern styles.

By combining these modern coastal decor ideas, you can create a living space that brings all the peace and serenity of the beach back home with you. These tips will help you achieve a sophisticated design whether you’re redecorating a single room or your entire home.

However, even with these ideas to guide you, that’s not to say that curating the details of an entire home is easy.
